Climate change is now a crucial international issue and warnings about global warming have been extremely clear for a long time.
The Climate Change Leadership Awards 2010 will recognise, reward and celebrate South African businesses, community-based organisations or individuals who are taking the lead through positive voluntary action by implementing a range of activities related to combating global warming.
“These important awards will also do much to promote awareness and action towards a low carbon economy and thus a more sustainable planet,” said Jeunesse Park, Founder of Food & Trees for Africa.
For business climate change has developed from being a peripheral concern to an increasingly more central issue for considered thought and decision-making by executives and investors around the globe. Climate change business leaders have discovered that, besides it being the right thing to do, early and meaningful action on climate change can have significant benefits.
Talk Radio 702 and 567 CapeTalk are the primary media partners of the CCLA Awards.
“When we heard about this initiative we were very keen to get involved as climate change is an issue of great relevance to our listeners’ lives. As a responsible media company we saw this as an opportunity to influence a large audience to make changes in their lives, to combat climate change,” said Terry Volkwyn, CEO of Primedia Broadcasting which owns the stations.
To prove that the stations are not just talk and no action, the entire company underwent a green audit recently, to gauge its impact on the environment. The broadcaster will now be looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint, including educating their staff, and engaging their suppliers on their impact on the environment. Furthermore they plan to share their experiences with listeners who can learn from them.
The key sponsor of the community is the South African Post Office (SAPO)
The South African Post Office is privileged to sponsor the Community Award for the 2010 Climate Change Leadership Awards and so be part of the steps taken to foster awareness of climate change at all levels of society. It hopes to encourage real, effective steps to combat climate change at community level through the awards.
“We believe that work to combat climate change at grassroots level should be encouraged,” says SAPO CEO Motshoanetsi Lefoka. “We are aware of the effect that business activities can have on the environment, which is why the South African Post Office itself is investing in technology and processes that limit environmental impact.”
