HSBC formed a partnership with Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) in 2007 and has since supported the development of a food garden in Orange Farm, Trees for Homes for staff birthdays in Alexandra, contributed to the greening of communities and has offset their carbon emissions for the British and Irish Lions tour in South Africa through the National Tree Distribution Programme.
A request was received from HSBC to assess the SOS Children’s Village in Ennerdale, Lenasia South to develop a Permaculture food garden for the orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) as well as the surrounding community. HSBC made funds available for the development of the SOS Permaculture food garden project as an extension of the family strengthening programme over twelve months from August of 2008. HSBC has been sponsoring food parcels to the needy families, mostly the children headed homes, especially those who have lost their parents through HIV/AIDS, TB and other related diseases.

WesBank, South Africa’s leading asset financier, has been working with national greening, climate change action and food gardening social enterprise Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) since 2006.
In 2008 they took an interest in the Soweto Greening project towards 2010 where FTFA is trying to get 200 000 Trees for Homes distributed to the residents to ensure a greener, more attractive and healthier environment in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

FTFA facilitator Mr Lawrence Tshuma. conducted two days practical Permaculture workshops at Maelebe Primary School which was attended by 38 participants in August 2009 at Maelebe Primary is in Steelpoort, Limpopo. From the 25th to the 28st of August 2009 Lawrence undertook a four-day practical Permaculture workshop conducted at Bakubang Primary School in Rustenburg, North West and on the 21 and 22 September 2009 Lawrence conducted a practical Permaculture workshop at Tshepo Primary School which was attended by 28 participants in Ikaneng, Potchefstroom, in the North West province.

Following these communications and proposals submitted by FTFA, the Frank Golino Bequest funding was applied to establish Permaculture projects at Lesodi Motlana Higher Primary School in Backenburg South Circuit, Limpopo, Tswelopele School project in Soweto, Gauteng, Galakwinstroom Primary School in Mokopane, Limpopo and the Cyrildene Gardening Club Project at Cyrildene Primary School in Gauteng.

Citadel has worked with Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA) on several occasions to establish food gardens for various communities. In 2006 Citadel staff participated in a staff event at Masisebenze School. In 2007 Citadel donated fencing to Masisebenze school to address problems with marauding animals in the food garden. In 2009 Citadel again approached FTFA, this time for assistance in greening the Wings of Life Community Centre in Diepsloot, Gauteng.

On 4 September 2009, the Japanese volunteers from the Wonderful World Tree Planting Festival (WWTPF) joined the Queen Mother of the Royal Bafokeng to help Seolo Middle School to set up a Permaculture food garden. Located in Tlaseng Village in the North West Province of South Africa, Seolo Middle School was initiated in early 1970 as a primary school and became a middle school in 1984. There are 410 learners and 16 educators at the school. The Royal Bafokeng Institute is working with all the schools in the Royal Bafokeng area, sponsoring and maintaining schools and was pleased to engage with FTFA to assist this school to develop a food garden.

On 6 September the Japanese volunteers visited Sizwe Hospital School in Sandringham Gauteng, to help them clear and replenish their food garden and planted shrubs and trees to celebrate Arbor Month.
Sizwe Hospital School established a small covered garden where children with tuberculosis are taught how to grow vegetables and provides healthy food and nutrition education to terminally ill, HIV infected, orphaned and vulnerable children. FTFA has been assisting this project with funding from Woolworths Head Office’s’ paper recycling project.

On 3 September 113 volunteers from Japan visited Swartkop Valley Primary School to help them to improve and plant more in their food garden. A small school located near Muldersdrift in Gauteng, the Swartkop Valley Primary School initiated their Permaculture food gardens with funding initially received from SASOL, and more recently from Woolworths. National social enterprise Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) has been providing Permaculture skills training support and materials for this school since July 2006 and their gardens have been visited by many as a food security model.

 Ms Nicola Bekker approached Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) in early 2008 to discuss the various options for funding a food gardening project in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.The Boy-Boy Mginywa Preschool was identified as the project that was to receive support. An assessment took place on the 25th of July 2008 by Ms Sue Spies. Ms Bekker was able to raise the necessary funds to support this project through the NCDO (Nationale Commissie voor Internationale Samenwerking en Duurzame Ontwikkeling - National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development) and 1%Club.

In celebration of World Environment Day on 5th June, Motorsport South Africa (MSA), the controlling body of all forms of motorsport in South Africa, embarked on a greening campaign to plant trees at disadvantaged schools across the country.
In 1996, MSA became the first National Sports Federation in South Africa to adopt an Environmental Code and recently appointed a specialist Environmental Panel as part of their structure. Through this management structure MSA ensures that the highest environmental standards are met during the organisation and hosting of more than 1 200 motorsport events annually at all levels and it also promotes environmental education amongst all motorsport role players (approximately 16 000 competitors).
With financial assistance from the international controlling body of motorcycling, the FIM, trees were purchased from national greening social enterprise, Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA).
With their assistance, as well as regional representatives from MSA, the trees will be planted in June at 11 schools in the Western Cape, KwaZulu Natal, Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape, to promote greening, awareness of climate change, food security and to offset carbon dioxide emissions.

As part of their environmental drive Nashua Mobile has encouraged their clients to receive paperless billing. For every account that goes paperless Nashua Mobile donates ten rand to Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) for their National Tree Distribution Programme. This initiative is in line with Nashua Mobile's corporate social responsibility strategy, which includes a significant focus on environmental challenges and sustainable use of resources.

From 15 to19 September 2008, 200 HSBC employees participated in the establishment of a Permaculture food garden at SOS Children’s Village in Ennerdale, south of Lenasia. Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) trained the HSBC employees and project members on site so that they could lay out and design a resourceful garden, prepare and improve the soil, conserve water, plant vegetables and herbs, and learn basic biological pest management.

Pride 'n Purpose, the nonprofit arm of Ulusaba, is committed to helping disadvantaged communities living adjacent to the reserve. Pride 'n Purpose's work is achieved both through the provision of basic needs, such as access to food, water and health services, and by empowering communities with sustainable development initiatives. Since April 2008 the gift of greening has been given to residents of Alexandra Ext 8 every month, in celebration of HSBC Africa’s staff’s birthdays.  On the 18 February 2009 an event was held in Tembisa to distribute 440 trees to the residents of ward 8 through Food & Trees for Africa’s (FTFA) Trees for Homes programme which is greening degraded and denuded environments, as well as offsetting carbon emissions. Launched during Arbor Week 2008, Audi South Africa agreed to plant one tree for every new Audi sold in South Africa through FTFA, South Africa’s greening, climate change action and food security social enterprise. This amounted to 9 500 trees which have contributed to the Greening of Ekurhuleni, a Mayoral project that FTFA has been implementing with the Ekurhuleni Municipal Metro Parks Department over the last few years, and which aims to see a fruit tree for every house in the Metro.

The Windsor Secondary School’s vision of creating a permaculture food garden in its hometown of Ladysmith in Kwa-Zulu Natal has become a reality, with support from energy company TOTAL South Africa. Permaculture food gardening encourages schools to develop their own fruit, herb and vegetable gardens to help alleviate poverty amongst the learners, the teachers and the members of the immediate communities. Take only photographs, leave only footprints – at the very least this is what Peugeot has done by planting 18 indigenous white karee trees at the Thulamntwana facility in Orange Farm to signify closure of the Coast2Coast event. Ex-rally car drivers Andrew Carter and Spotti Woodhead tested the limits of the Peugeot 308 HDi’s fuel efficiency of their own accord, driving it from Kleinzee to Umhlanga on a single 60 liter tank of diesel. Achieving 1689.7km (3.4 liters per 100km), their effort is considered a phenomenal success.

ZOOM Advertising - Ogilvy's retail advertising agency that believes in
innovation and sustainable marketing that delivers results - is the
first advertising agency in South Africa to voluntarily offset its
carbon by planting trees.
The agency analysed its total carbon footprint in terms of electricity
and paper usage, as well as the staff vehicular
travel and executive air travel. This information was then fed into the
carbon calculator on FTFAs website, www.trees.co.za which showed that
ZOOM needed to plant 325 trees but they chose to distribute 360 trees
through FTFAs award winning Trees for Homes Programme.

O.R. Tambo International Airport in partnership with SAB Miller and Ekurhuleni Municipal Metro is planting over 650 indigenous trees at the Ke-Ditselane Cultural Village in Katlehong on the East Rand. The initiative is part of a project implemented by Food and Trees for
Africa (FTFA) on behalf of the cultural village and sponsored by O.R.
Tambo International Airport to train 20 community members on how to
plant and care for the trees. The 20 individuals are taken through a
week of intensive training to impart skills that can be used on similar
projects in the community.

Peugeot showcased the ultra efficiency of their latest model, the
308 HDI, by driving it nearly 1,800km with less than R 680 of diesel in
the tank. The 1.6 litre Peugeot 308 HDI left the isolated coastal town
of Port Nolloth in the Northern Cape on Monday, October 13th and
arrived in Durban, KZN, on Wednesday, October 15th – 1,760km later.

Food & Trees for Africa again partnered Rocking the Daisies and
Complete Events to make this year’s festival greener than ever! In 2007
and 2008 the event’s carbon dioxide emissions were determined using
FTFA’s online carbon calculator. In 2007 130 trees were required to offset the event’s carbon footprint,
however, as strong supporters of FTFA, the organisers decided to plant
175 trees which included five trees on the Cloof Wine Estate and 170
trees in various disadvantaged communities within the Western Cape.

Nashua Mobile is donating R55,700 to FTFA for the months of April
and May in line with its promise to donate R10 to the organisation for
every one of its subscribers who opt to receive electronic bills rather
than paper-based statements for their monthly accounts. During April, 164 Nashua Mobile staff members as well as 2620
subscribers made the switch to electronic billing. In May, Nashua
Mobile managed to convert an additional 2780 customers to e-mail
billing.

On the 8th April 2008 the gift of greening was given to 20 residents of Alexandra, one of Johannesburg’s oldest townships, in celebration of 20 HSBC Africa’s staff’s birthdays. Over the next twelve months, a total of 200 indigenous and fruit trees will be distributed to homeowners residing in impoverished settlement areas in and around Johannesburg every time a staff member of HSBC Africa celebrates a birthday. Each HSBC staff member will also receive a certificate pronouncing his/her gift of a tree.

Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation (Highveld) is launching its
fourth Highveld Sinakekela Imvelo Competition to motivate waste
management and greening action within primary schools in areas of its
operation. Based on the success of previous years, Highveld has again
appointed national greening organisation Food & Trees for Africa
(FTFA) to coordinate the programme. This includes waste and greening
awareness workshops whereby educators are briefed about the competition
and assisted with ways and means of collecting waste, running clean up
campaigns and shown how to prepare vegetables garden.
Recognising the seriousness of litter and food security problem in
areas of its operation, Highveld urges all eMalahleni and Roossenekal
primary schools to participate in the competition.

 In April 2008 PPC Cement together with Food & Trees for Africa
(FTFA) officially launched Permaculture gardens for the Zenzele
Counseling Project in Fine Town. The Zenzele Counseling Project, a
home-based care organisation was started by the late Winnie Getrude
Mabaso, known in her Fine Town community as Mama Winnie. She touched
the hearts of her community and that of PPC.
The Zenzele project counsels adults, orphans and vulnerable children
(OVCs) infected and affected by HIV and AIDS, and has undertaken an
initiative to grow their own organic fruit and vegetables to supply
those attending the centre with a consistent and long-term supply of
adequate nutrition.

A rehabilitation centre located on a farm in Randfontein in Gauteng
now incorporates food gardening into its unique approach to
rehabilitating its patients for drug and alcohol abuse.
Established in 1999 and led by Reverend Tsietsi Z Motaung, The Carroll
Shaw Christian Rehabilitation Centre uses a broad-based psychological
and religious programme to assist patients referred to the centre by
churches, other addiction centers, organizations and community members
with their rehabilitation. The aim is to rehabilitate patients and send
them back to their families and communities as individuals with renewed
vision, attitudes and skills – many of which now include Permaculture
techniques and food gardening expertise.

Thanks to Citadel, the organic vegetables growing in the beautifully
manicured Permaculture garden of the Masisebenze Comprehensive School
in Tembisa are now protected from theft and vandalism.
In September 2007, FTFA helped Citadel to facilitate a staff day out to

Masisebenze Comprehensive School Permaculture food gardening project as

Jody Scheckter, South Africa's only ever Formula 1 champion, is
sponsoring 11 000 trees for the Greening of Soweto towards 2010
project. Together with Talk Radio 702, the City of Johannesburg and
Johannesburg City Parks, Jody handed over 500 of these trees to
residents of Soweto on 1 September 2007. This event also marked the
start of Arbor Week 2007. Talk Radio 702 and Johannesburg City Parks
sponsored the handover function and 100 VIPs and 500 community members
attended. Jody Scheckter, Mayor Amos Masondo, Councilor for the
Environment in Gauteng, Prema Naidoo, Mrs Winnie Madikizela Mandela,
Miss Earth SA and finalists, Keith Kirsten, Pheladi Gwangwa and other

residents of wards 36, 44 and 45 to celebrate Arbor Week and the

MultiChoice contacted FTFA early in 2008 to fulfill their Corporate
Social Investment Strategy with an environmental initiative that
entailed the planting of trees and educating their staff members on the
importance and value of them. MultiChoice chose to distribute and plant
61 indigenous trees through the National Tree Distribution Programme at
the Ekukhanyesweni Primary School in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
Ekukhanyesweni Primary School is located at 330 Phase 2, 6th Avenue in
Alexandra.
The tree distribution and planting event took place on the 1st of
February 2008 on a clear and sunny day.

A few years ago, instead of sending Christmas cards to their clients, Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments planted a number of trees across South Africa. In December 2007 Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments approached FTFA to again plant trees, this time at schools and for those staff members that had taken part in an internal Green Planet Campaign.
The campaign was designed to encourage staff to buy into our efforts to become the leader in South Africa in terms of Green Building development and design. Staff members were asked to carry out two “green” tasks per week for 8 weeks (one home and one office based) and to rate their performance each week. Each staff member that had taken part in the Green Planet Campaign had a tree planted in their name and in March this year 100 trees were distributed to three schools in impoverished areas of Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape respectively.

As a symbol of its ongoing commitment to sustainable environmental
practices, PEP is donating 357 trees to schools in the Western Cape and
Ekurhuleni. The donation was marked by the planting of the first 30
trees at Uitsig, CL Wilmot and Tygersig Primary in the Western Cape on
Thursday 8 May 2008. The project is being managed and implemented by FTFA. The balance of
the trees will then be planted in Ekurhuleni and at Nyanga school in
the Western Cape through FTFA’s Trees for Homes programme which plants
fruit and indigenous trees in townships.

Fruits Unlimited, a leading South African fruit supply chain manager
specialising in the export of top quality fruit, is the first company
of its kind in South Africa to offset their carbon emissions by
planting trees. In 2007, calculations and an evaluation of the carbon footprint for
Fruits Unlimited Exports (Pty) Ltd and Unlimited Logistics (Pty) Ltd,
was conducted using the guidelines set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
These calculations were based on the financial year July 2006 to June
2007 and carbon emissions associated with all business related travel
such as flights and rental car transport, as well as electricity, were
measured.

FTFA faciliated a one day Permaculture food gardening workshop at
the Anglican Cathedral in Pretoria, a venue frequently visited by many
people for prayers, workshops and meetings. The selection of this site
was therefore to ensure that a permaculture model garden is made
accessible to all those visitors.
The workshop was facilitated by Lawrence T. Tshuma who stressed the
need and advantages for people to grow their own vegetables instead of
buying these. He also highlighted the work of FTFA nationally in the
areas of food security and the environment.

Picture Tree and the family of the late Nicholas Nocker donated 100 trees to the community of Orlando west in Soweto in memory of Nicolas Nocker who died tragically and too young. These 100 trees were planted towards the Soweto Greening project which aims to planting 200 000 indigenous and fruits trees in Soweto by 2011 through FTFAs Trees for Homes programme that provides fruit and/or indigenous trees for homeowners, training for unemployed community members to become community based educators (CBEs), and short term employment for these CBEs who spread awareness of the need for clean and green neighbourhoods, biodiversity, healthy environments and climate change..

The Jupiter Drawing Room donated R2 500 for trees for Soweto Greeining.
This is one of the exciting projects leading up to the 2010 FIFA Soccer
World Cup. As South Africa readies itself to prepare for millions of
fans, players, media and more to descend on its cities and soccer
stadiums, Soweto stands out as the gateway community. The tree planting
event took place on 11 December in Chiawelo, Soweto and was attended by
the environmental committee, the Chiawelo Community Traditional G.
The Electoral Commission (IEC) launched the planting of Democracy
Trees for its 10th anniversary celebrations. The IEC is aware of its
joint responsibility with all other organisations and corporations both
nationally and globally to care for the environment. The planting of
“democracy trees” at the Makgatho Primary School in Atteridgeville on
the 25th of October was the first phase in a five year campaign that
will oversee the planting of over 300 000 trees at voting stations
countrywide. The project is done in partnership with Food and Trees for
Africa (FTFA), the Department of Education and the Department of Water
Affairs and Forestry.

Ernst & Young approached FTFA for assistance with planting trees in
celebration of Arbor Week. Heatherdale and Garlandale Primary Schools
in Athlone were chosen to receive 20 trees each.The sandy soil and
windy climate of the area where the schools are situated means that
vegetation is sparse. The trees planted by Ernst & Young beautify
these school environments as well as create shade, reduce soil erosion
and unnecessary water runoff, enhance biodiversity and contribute
towards reducing carbon emissions.

In celebration of Abor Week 2007 Deloitte decided to plant 100 trees in
conjunction with the launch of their Greening Strategy. Deloitte
approached FTFA to assist them with the procurement, distribution and
roll out of this event. The trees were to be planted through FTFA’s

Thanks to the De Beers Fund, the residents of Onverwacht, a
government housing initiative near Cullinan in the Gauteng Province,
received indigenous to improve their quality of life and to green this
presently dusty region. Onverwacht has a housing capacity of 300 RDP houses that were
constructed between 1999 and 2000. Half of the population is
unemployed and those that do generate an income work primarily at the
De Beers Cullinan Diamond Mine or as farm labourers and domestic
workers in and around Cullinan town. There has never before been a
greening initiative in this settlement.

De Beers hosted a tree-planting ceremony on 6 November to distribute
trees to homeowners in Kliptown, Soweto. De Beers was one of the first
companies to work with FTFA on the Carbon Standard programme that was
formed to make it easy and affordable for government, individuals,
corporations, communities, schools and homes to offset carbon
emissions by planting trees.

Citadel approached FTFA to facilitate an employee day out in a
Permaculture Food Garden project as part of their ongoing corporate
social investment campaign. Masisibenze in Tembisa was the lucky school
to benefit from ‘Reach Out Day’ which not only focused on assisting
with the school’s garden project financially but also focused on
helping the school through labour provided by Citadel employees. On 28
September 2007, FTFA project officers Ryan Dickey and Busiswa Wawa
assisted with the facilitation of a one day workshop at Masisibenze
Comprehensive School in Tembisa in collaboration with 50 volunteers
from Citadel. Activities included clearing and preparing the garden
area, learning about soil, composting, geographical contours of
landscape, using A-frames, garden bed types and demarcating swales.

On Saturday the 4th August 2007, Barloworld greened 75 homes in
Diepkloof Zone 2, Soweto as part of its Corporate Social Investment
scheme. In conjunction with FTFA an additional 75 Barloworld trees were
planted in Naledi, also in Soweto a few days later. The trees were
distributed through FTFA’s Trees for Homes programme, a highly
successful and innovative public greening initiative that contributes
nationally and in a visible way to building a new country whilst
simultaneously addressing climate change. Buskaid, a charitable trust
that aids young black musicians in South Africa’s informal settlements,
entertained home owners collecting their trees.
This year Arbor Week was cause for a double celebration for the
Leseding Care Givers, of Hammanskraal, Gauteng. Not only did they
celebrate the value and importance of trees, they also launched the
Permaculture food garden that this group of dedicated care givers has
worked hard all year to develop, with the training from FTFA, and
generous sponsorship from The Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire
and the Urban Greening Fund.

Where unemployment is rife in a hot, isolated region of Mpumalanga, a
food gardening project is making a difference in the lives of local
community members.The Mahlekisana Permaculture Project at Mahlekisana
Primary School is in Welverdiend Village on the border of the Ngala
Private Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. The project was
initiated in November 2006 with funding from Africa Foundation, through
Old Mutual and other donors, and training and development provided by
FTFA.

Global Markets, one of three ABN AMRO Business Units that develops
products for commercial clients across the globe, ran a Client Survey
and selected five participants to nominate one charity to which ABN
AMRO would donate EUR 10,000. South Africa’s national greening
organization, FTFA, was fortunate to be one of the charities selected
by ABN AMRO United Kingdom and with these funds distributed 1 371
indigenous trees to homeowners in Zola, a district of Soweto. As one of
the first private companies to partner with FTFA in the Soweto Greening
campaign, ABN AMRO also distributed 700 trees to residents in Jabavu
during the 2006 Arbor Week to commemorate their 10th anniversary in
South Africa.

Following the successful first phase of the Greening of Mpumalanga, FTFA is delighted to announce that they will continue their partnership with the Department of Agriculture and Land administration, Mpumalanga, to continue this successful project into 2009.This is the first province to recognise the many benefits of greening for poverty alleviation, food security, to address global warming and enhanced environments for residents and apply funding to achieve this. Johannesburg and FTFA, to plant 3201 fruit and indigenous trees in
Cosmo City, a government housing initiative, to the north of
Johannesburg, to offset the carbon generated by South African
Breweries’ (SAB) central offices. The project is in line with the SAB’s
corporate social investment focus areas of social and environmental

Inhabitants of Ivory Park received a green boost on the 5th July 2007 when WesBank and Motorsport South Africa (MSA) distributed 230 trees to the residents of Extension 9 and schools in the Kyalami region of Gauteng. This important event saw WesBank Super Series racing drivers taking a break from the action-packed circuits of the 2007 MSA National Championship League, to plant trees for residents in the under-served northern Ivory Park region. Managed by Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) through its award-winning Trees for Homes programme, the tree-planting ceremony educated and empowered the youth and surrounding community to take care of their environment.

Potchefstroom aims to lead the way in limiting the greenhouse gases
emitted by the City Council, as well as the energy used by the City
Council to set an example for their community and the rest of South
Africa. The Potchefstroom City Council (PCC) has set an emissions
reduction of 10% by 2012. To meet this target the city drafted a
Climate Change Action Plan with programmes such as the design and
construction of energy efficient buildings, in accordance with the
South African Energy and Demand Efficiency Standard, planting a minimum
of 15 000 trees to sequestrate CO2, energy efficient streetlights, the
recovery of methane from the sewage purification works and retrofitting
the airport runway and taxiway. They then approached FTFA to assist
with the tree planting project through Trees for Homes to also provide
training and skills development and short term employment towards
poverty alleviation.

Soweto on Thursday 7 September 2006. Simon Penney, ABN AMRO South

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) is offsetting its greenhouse gas emissions
by planting trees in poor and underserved communities within the
proximity of every one of their 24 offices nationwide. In this manner,
PWC is going carbon neutral by planting over 9 000 indigenous trees to
offset their generated annual carbon emissions as calculated from each
South African office’s electricity consumption and employees’ road and
air travel.

The Farm Africa Foundation / Jody Scheckter Lukanyiso Lomtshabe
Development Project is a community food gardening project conducted in
eight different villages in the district of Cofimvaba in the Eastern
Cape. Farm Africa has been actively supporting these communities for a
number of years. The overall objective of the project is to provide the
participants with training in organic practices to assist with
sustainable farming activities and to distribute resources that assist
with this process. Each community plot is divided into sub-plots, one
per project member. An existing and successful part of the project is a
micro-lending scheme to assist small-scale farmers and to develop and
support household food security in a low-cost and sustainable way.

Educating the youth on “reduce, re-use and recycle” issues is an
important step in dealing with litter pollution problems. It is also a
factor in addressing global warming. Highveld Steel, in partnership with
Food and Trees for Africa, is in its third year of running the Highveld
Sinakekela Imvelo (Caring for the Environment) competition targeting
primary schools in Emalahleni as well as the Roossenekal areas. The
competition requires that schools run “clean up” campaigns, collecting
waste for recycling or to use in a creative way on an ongoing basis to
further the awareness of the importance of recycling.
Schools are also encouraged to start food gardens.

Thembinkosi Special School is situated in the informal settlement area
of Winnie Mandela Park in Tembisa Johannesburg accommodates learners
with special needs, mentally and physically challenged. Late in
November 2006, FTFA was requested by Nestlé to assess Thembinkosi
Special School to see if a Permaculture food garden would assist the
school and its learners and found that the school would greatly benefit
and Nestlé agreed to fund the implementation of a 12 month training
program to assist in implementing and managing the school Permaculture
food garden.

In October last year, the Total Facilities Management Company (TFMC)
held what was the first Golf Day in South Africa to take account of
climate change. TFMC contacted FTFA to do calculations on the carbon
emissions for the day and then donated trees to offset these to the
residents of Botshabelo Recreational Park in Mabopane, North West
Province. TFMC’s contribution, together with assistance from the
Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, the Tswane Municipality, a
local community-based organisation called MADEPRO and the Department of
Agriculture, resulted in the distribution of 450 trees to residents in
this settlement.
Botshabelo Recreational Park is an RDP residential area that consists
of well-sized stands, sanitation facilities and access to clean water.
But a lack of trees gives little shelter from the sun and dust in this
hot, dry area. TFMC and FTFA aimed to address this by planting trees
through FTFA’s award-winning Trees for Homes programme, an innovative
public greening initiative that contributes nationally and in a visible
way to improving quality of life and the environment, whilst addressing
climate change.

Johnnic Communications is helping to develop food gardens in the Bohlabela District (formerly Bushbuckridge) in Limpopo. There are 45 PHC clinics in the district, including 2 health centres. Many of these clinics are rolling out the Anti Retroviral programme and are unable to provide these drugs without ensuring that patients have access to healthy and nutritious food which will facilitate the taking of the ARVs and contribute to improved immune systems. Johnnic Communications agreed to support three gardens, Murhotso, Ludlow and Hluvukani, in the area to be developed as centres for training and material assistance.

Following the success of the distribution of 702 trees in Soweto on 9th

time in Ivory Park. This initiative was the latest in Talk Radio 702’s

Patanthswana Community Development Centre, situated in
a remote settlement called Nebo in Southern Limpopo Province, not far
from Jane Furse Hospital , will be starting a permaculture food garden
with support from AECI. The community gardeners are mainly unemployed
elderly women who are enthusiastic about any assistance that they may
receive. Two of them have already attended a Permaculture Design Course
at Rustlers Valley in the Eastern Free State.

Under the leadership of Reverend Tsietsi Z. Motaung, Carroll Shaw, a Christian based institution, was started in 1999 when HIV/AIDS programmes were implemented at the Zuurbekom site on the West Rand of Gauteng Province. The project also assists the juveniles from the community who have drug and alcohol abuse problems. The aim is to rehabilitate them at the Carroll Shaw Memorial Center site in Brandvlei and send them back to their families as people with new visions, attitudes and skills.

On the 5th May 2006 Pula-Madibogo Primary School in Mankweng, Limpopo, received acknowledgment and support for their continued efforts in their Permaculture food garden from Amvia who supplied gardening tools and seedlings and Nedbank through FTFA. The day was filled with song, dance and a colourful display from the school?s drum majorettes. ABSA Foundation sponsored three projects focussing on the vulnerable and HIV/Aids. Viljoenskroon Hospice was founded in 1993 and has been actively involved in home based care for terminally ill patients. They aim to improve the quality of the patient?s last days by offering them and their families? home-based compassionate care. When nutritional needs are met and care and counseling is provided, emotional and spiritual support given, HIV/ Aids patients do live longer and discover there is life after being diagnosed HIV positive. A member of Viljoenskroon Hospice is currently attending a Permaculture Design Course and the food gardens have been started and already show great promise.

The East Rand Protective Workshop north of the
Johannesburg International Airport in Pomona provides a home for about
100 mentally handicapped adults and serves as a care center. The advent
of their permaculture organic food garden, supported by the Urban
Greening Fund (a partnership with DWAF, LandCare SA and IERM) has

RB Hagart Trust is contributing funding, along with the Urban Greening Fund,
Wits University Medical School and others, to the development of food
gardens and a training centre at Beziudenhout Park to service the 50
ECDC inner city creches that have volunteered to work on the land. An
NGO called Siyakana has been formed to manage the project which is
being implemented with a number of partners, including Johannesburg
City Parks, Johannesburg Roads Agency and Wits University Medical
School's Health Promotion Unit, who will do a study and research paper
on the project. It is linked to the University's Early Childhood
Development Programme.

The Gauteng Department of Housing
has supported the development of food gardens at Peoples Housing
Centres in Orange Farm Extension 1, Orange Farm Proper and Kanana,
south of Johannesburg, and at Kagiso and Rietvallei in Mogale. Local
unemployed people have been trained in the development of organic food
gardens, water harvesting and management. All five projects are now
harvesting vegetables for consumption and sale. Fruit and indigenous
trees were planted, water tanks and fencing erected. Some of the Kagiso
project members are HIVE positive and work in Home Based Care.

Frikkie Smit Primary School is a very small school in North West
Province , a few kilometers from Skeerpoort, off the R560 on the way to
Magaliesburg. Frikkie Smit Primary School will implement a food
gardening project with 4 educators, 6 community members and the
learners at the school. Swartkop Valley Primary School is about 5
kilometers from Muldersdrift and is a noticeably well run and organised
school that has started food gardening and recycling and looks forward
to the training and new skills SASOL's support will bring.

The project started at Seroka Clinic where a vegetable garden was developed by predominantly Circle bed mulched unemployed women and youth in 2004. This area has high levels of unemployment with many relying on pensions. Whilst the communities practice seasonal food planting, this is on a small scale due to severe soil erosion caused by drought, over grazing by livestock, wind and water.

Makhoarane School in Dobsonville, Soweto, funded by
Investec, aims to produce vegetables and supplement the school's
nutrition feeding scheme and the orphans and vulnerable children who
attend the school. The Permaculture project is used for educational
purposes for the school and for skills development for interested
community members. "I am eating healthy vegetables from the garden
thanks to Investec. One day when I am grown up I will put my
investments through you guys", said Tumelo Lesedi learner from
Makhoarane school. 25 needy children benefitted from the vegetables. An educator had attended a Permaculture Design Course and the motivated
headmaster identified another project at a church called Letsema which
is currently being developed. "Forward we go, backwards never. We are
starting this business no matter what. Thank you Investec for your
support!" said Tshepo Thekiso, who attended the course and has now
opened an organic gardening business.

This project aims to continue the highly successful development of schools as resource centres to train and support schools and communities in their area with Permaculture food gardening, sustainable natural resource development and nutrition and improved environments and quality of life. Piet N Aphane Senior Secondary School is situated in the Zebediela district in Potgietersrus, Limpopo. The school was established in 1994 and introduced to greening activities by FTFA's EduPlant Programme in 2001. There are 300 learners and 12 teachers. In 2004 the school participated in Greening the Future Mail & Guardian awards in which they received a certificate under the category Not for Profit Organisation Community Based Organisations. They seek to help their surrounding schools with training and resources such as water tanks, tools and plants.

The Nomzamo Permaculture Project is situated in
Mamelodi West at 19178 Kubone Street. FTFA originally secured funds to
develop and implement Permaculture food garden training, provide tools
and equipment for the Nomzamo (meaning "keep on trying") community
group on the land next to Morakoma Primary School donated by Kagiso
Trust in 1999. This allowed the first group of 35 project members to be
trained in sustainable land-use management and produce organic food to
feed their families and generate an income from the sale of fresh
vegetables.
These fantastic gardens supply food for approximately 40 gardeners
today and have attracted other sponsors. In 2005 with help from the
Robert Niven Trust FTFA purchased three water-tanks, irrigation
materials and three stands.

Maila Mapitsane
Permaculture Project, generally referred to as Ga-Maila is food
gardening project sponsored by the De Beers Fund is at a rural
settlement lying at the foot of Lulu Mountains in Makhuduthamanga Municipality in the Sekhukhune District of the Limpopo Province
. Chopping trees for firewood and overgrazing by livestock have had a
cumulative effect causing devastating soil erosion. Unemployment is
very high and most of the 24 members of the project are pensioners so
food gardening will provide a basic need. Vegetable seedlings
were planted in 16 plots measuring 40 x 40 meter plots. A variety of
fruit trees (including citrus, mangoes, pecan nuts, avocados) were also
planted in all the plots in the garden. Other fruit trees were
distributed to the members and the local chief to plant at their homes.
Indigenous shade trees were also planted as windbreaks along the fence.
Project members were made aware that some of the indigenous trees like
water berry will produce fruit for both people and birds, and also that
when fully grown can also be used for making poles. Herbs were planted
in the garden to help with pest control as well as provide the members
with medicines.

Since spring in 2005 the residents of the Far East
Bank Extension 8 in Alexandra, one of South Africa's oldest townships,
have been developing their gardens. This Greening of Alex is part of
the Presidential Alexandra Renewal Project. One hundred and eighty one residents have attended
gardening and greening workshops, received door to door gardening
advice and have been given trees, shrubs, vegetable and flower seeds
and lawn. This is part of a broader process of managing the environment
in Alexandra and has contributed to making the community aware of the
importance of a clean and healthy environment. The Alexandra Renewal
Project recognises that the redevelopment of Alexandra can only be
sustainable if residents take ownership of the process and this
Greening of Alex project has successfully supported this involvement.

In 2000 Emthonjeni Correctional Services facility
approached FTFA through the Tshwane University of Technology students
to assist them to train young inmates between the ages of 14 and 21 to
develop organic food gardens and environmental greening projects at
Emthonjeni Correctional Services. FTFA secured funds from bhp Billton
through the Urban Greening Fund to establish a permaculture project and
community outreach programme. Emthonjeni consists of 1600 inmates
serving time whilst involved in variety of trades. With Billton
Development Fund's financial support, FTFA provided the training,
infrastructure development, educational resource materials, development
processes, plant material, tools and capacity building.

The Highveld Steel Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Food
Gardening Competition addresses the need to deal with the environmental
and aesthetic problem of litter in many areas of Witbank and
Roossenekal and to encourage schools in the area to develop food
gardens. Workshops for educators are held to provide information on how
to run clean up campaigns in their local areas, collect waste to
recycle for income generation and how to create useful, artistic or
craft items from waste. All are encouraged to recycle all organic waste
through the making of compost to improve the soil at their schools for
the development of organic food gardens. The competition opens many
opportunities for schools to learn about the environment and
sustainable land use, to improve food security and to help keep their
communities clean. It will assist in motivating the learners to raise
funds for their schools as well as offer a chance for their schools to
win great prizes.

The South African Scout Association in partnership
with Food and Trees for Africa and Abalimi Bezekhaya recently compiled
three new booklets for the food garden curriculum to be implemented
this year within the Scout Association of South Africa. The booklets
include 3 different levels of academic and practical applications which
enable the Scouts to receive badgea/certification. These are a Starter
Badge booklet, which also includes cubs, Silver Badge and Gold Badge.

Ikaneng Campus A and B Permaculture project is situated
in Diepkloof Zone 4 next to the famous Soweto Highway . Mrs. Florah
Lesele, the principal, is an outstanding headmistress in her community
and Ikaneng has had many achievements under her guidance and
leadership. The school has won the renowned Woolworths Trust EduPlant
competition which is run in conjunction with FTFA in partnership with
SABC Education, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and
LandCare.

African Solutions to African Problems (ASAP) and Hlomelikusasa are
planning the installation of vegetable gardens and poultry projects for
30 Village Health Workers (VHWs) from 2006 – 2008 to provide reliable
access to nutrition for OVCs in these isolated communities.
Hlomelikusasa is a community-based organisation in the town of Mount
Frere in the Eastern Cape. It was founded by Boniswa Ngule, a trainer
in Home-Based Care, First Aid and organic agriculture. The organisation
has 80 VHWs who care for people affected and infected by HIV/AIDS in 49
rural districts in and around Mount Frere. FTFA has been providing
permaculture training to Boniswa and the other committed community
carers so that they can develop nutrition and healing food gardens for
themselves and the many they serve.
As part of the National Development Agency (NDA)
support for the Indali Agricultural Project , near Orange Farm in
Sebokeng, FTFA organized a five day agri business workshop with the
South African Institute for Entrepreneurship. The workshop aimed to
equip participants with knowledge and skills in planning for
production, allocation of responsibilities amongst project members and
marketing.

Further to discussions with Nestlė in 2006 FTFA was
asked to identify schools in areas near to Nestlė’s operations that had
requested assistance with greening activities and nutrition projects.
Ten urban and rural schools were selected, six around Gauteng ( in
Thembisa and Alexandra Townships ) and four in the North West (
Hammanskraal) to receive support through the distribution of fruit and
shade trees, vegetable seedlings and vegetable seeds.

The Swartkop Valley Permaculture Project, in peri urban
Muldersdrift, Gauteng, is focused on creating a permaculture garden
that provides healthy fruit, herbs, vegetables, flowers, shrubs and
indigenous trees to its learners. With funding from Sasol FFA is
helping them to effectively integrate permaculture into the curriculum
and to change the mindset of this peri urban community about
permaculture as a sustainable economic programme that can alleviate
poverty.
The learners and the project members are thankful to Sasol for their
support. The herb and medicinal plants, together with fresh vegetables
from the garden, will keep learners and community members healthy. The
learners can now concentrate on their studies as they have full
tummies.
Funjwa School is a rural Primary School in Acornhoek in Limpopo
450kms from Johannesburg. The learners and educators have begun a food
garden but are looking to expand it to approximately four hectares to
support their own outreach programmes and further establish a feeding
scheme at the school. A large portion of the school’s learners consist
of orphaned and HIV/Aids infected children who will benefit from the
improved nutrition and food security obtained from an organic and
sustainable food garden.

Makapanstad lies 50 km to the North West of Pretoria, in the south
eastern corner of a portion of the former homeland of Bophuthatswana to
the east of the Crocodile River. Although farming is practiced in
Makapanstad, it does not conform to the stereotype of a rural area
where agricultural practices are used as a main source of livelihood.
Vegetation predominates the landscape and settlement is sparse. Most
adults are unemployed and many seasonally migrate to the urban areas in
search of work. Incomes are low and 67% of the population earns less
than R300 per month.

Mahletisane Primary School in Welverdiend Mpumalanga is another
beneficiary of Africa Foundation who raised funds from the Getty
Foundation to install a food garden. The school consists of 9
classrooms and there are 499 learners being taught by 15 educators. The
school has identified food gardening and permaculture as one of their
urgent needs. The school is well set up for a garden, is fenced and
has a water tank that can be utilised for the garden.
Mnqobokazi Primary School in a small rural village at
107km from Mtuba has developed an excellent food garden with the huge
energy of the principal, Mr Radebe. Africa Foundation and Hollard
Community Development Trust provided the funding to start the gardens
and for the training provided by Mrs Tudi Galloway on FTFAs behalf. The
project is doing very well the school is working well with the
community. The garden includes a variety herbs, fruit trees and
vegetables.

CAFDA is a NGO on the Cape Flats addressing the ongoing and
increasing need for family care particularly in case where families
have been negatively affected by social, economic and political change.
An alarmingly high instance in the breakdown in family life is
prevalent in these communities. In addition major social problems are
increasing including those of unemployment, gangs, substance abuse,
physical and sexual abuse (including child abuse), undisciplined
children, a high rate of school drop outs, teenage pregnancy and
poverty and family violence.

Apart from having built a school and a clinic the Mgwenyana project
has received funding from the ABSA Foundation for a food gardening
project for the local community to assist the clinic in providing
nutritional vegetables to its patients and to produce surplus
vegetables which will then be sold at the market. As a bonus the
project is close to Madiba’s home and the Nelson Mandela Museum near
Umtata in the former Transkei, Eastern Cape and could attract interest
from passers by.

Bakwena has supported FTFA through workshops along their corridor
over the past few years, and have sponsored Arbor Week events at
schools. They are now sponsoring a food garden at Lesedi Care Givers
project in Hammanskraal in the North West province. The site is at
Lesedi Care Givers office on land that was given to the project by the
local tribal authority. Before the installation of the water tap in the
garden Magalies Water Board helped with a motorized water supply to the
center. The project has 2 classrooms, an office block with 4 rooms and
a bakkie, all donated by Spoornet.

The Jody Scheckter Lukanyiso Lomtshabe Development Project is a
community food gardening project conducted in eight different villages
with a total of 204 participants. Farm Africa, another NGO, has been
actively supporting the community for a number of years and Jody
Scheckter asked FTFA to work with them to transfer organic knowledge.
The area has low rainfall, about 600 mm in summer, and shallow soil
profile. Soil conservation is thus critical. The project is intended to
develop and support household food security in a low-cost and
sustainable way by providing training.

The Carrol Shaw Memorial Centre, under the leadership of Reverend
Tsietsi Z. Motaung, is on 56 hectares at Witfontein, in Randfontein,
West Rand. It works in skills and rehabilitation programmes with those
affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, ex-drug and alcohol abusers and with
juveniles. The project started in 1999 and 27 people are involved in
HIV/AIDS awareness and community development training activities. 56
hectares is available for the development of natural farming and a
borehole and irrigation have been installed.

The Thembelihle Home Based Care is a project that cares for those
affected by HIV/Aids in Malelane, Mpumalanga. They have two hectares
available to develop food gardens to provide food for the many they
serve. The group of 70 are primarily unemployed and are affected by
HIV/Aids. They have established a garden to produce vegetables but need
to develop this through training, access to improved water supply and
more productivity.
Thembelihle Home Based Care center provides support to terminally ill
and HIV affected people, 150 orphans and 30 care givers through
HIV/AIDS counselling, home based care, facilitating HIV/AIDS workshops
and donating organic vegetables to orphans and vulnerable people.

Ulana School in Keiskammahoek in the village of Ulana in the Eastern
Cape proposes to develop a Permaculture garden to supply vegetable
produce for the school’s feeding scheme and to create a skills
development and income generation incentive for the learners, educators
and community members in the area. The Investec sponsored and SETA
registered FTFA Business Box educational and training material that was
designed to assist individuals to develop entrepreneurial skills and to
establish small business and marketing enterprises, will be
incorporated into the training programme to help with the selling and
marketing their agricultural produce.

Letsema project at the African Evangelical Church in
Soweto has over 500 members. It was established to cater for the
orphans in the area. About 120 young children come to the centre for
meals and other activities that include educational, recreational and
fine arts activities and counselling sessions. The area under vegetable
production at the back of the church is about 240 square meters.
Vegetables from Makhoarane School, where Mr Tumelo Mabitsela is the
principal, are also used in the kitchen.

The Nomzamo Permaculture project at the Morakomo
Primary School in Mamelodi West produces fresh vegetables, creates
self-employment and thus improves the quality of life of a number of
pensioners and others in the community. The Woolworths Campus paper
recycling funding is utilised for plant material and permaculture
workshops. Arbor Week 2006 was celebrated by inviting their
neighbouring schools and the community members. Bakwena Platinum
Corridor Concessionaire sponsored the event.

Shauna Westcott, the daughter of the late Nan Trollip, a long time

Huntington, Mpumalanga. The project has a garden that was established

The area in which the Matswathaka school project is
situated is called Bohlokong and is next to Bethlehem in a highly
populated semi-urban area with high unemployment. The school is
intermediate and has approximately 951 learners. The gardens are
maintained by the parents and learners and supplements the feeding
scheme. Their school’s vision is to develop their grounds
and garden to be a school’s permaculture resource centre and an
inspiration to other schools to strive for the same. This the school
believes can be achieved by developing a nursery, a food garden, an
orchard, demonstrable composting and compost heaps,a medicinal garden,
by planting trees and providing plants, seeds, information and
workshops to schools in the area.
